Answers to Questions from the Public

Do you think education should be treated as an essential service?

Asked by: Kamloops and District Labour Council asked the School Trustee 73 - TEA1 Candidates
Jennifer Rowse Answered

When I think about an essential service, I think "basic public needs." I absolutely believe that education is an essential service. Every child has the right to an education.

How would you address the challenges of the current funding structure for students with special needs?

Asked by: Kamloops and District Labour Council asked the School Trustee 73 - TEA1 Candidates
Jennifer Rowse Answered

This depends on the severity of the needs of child. Each child is so unique that funding needs to help parents and children. With divorce rates over 84% with special needs children involved we need to support the whole family.

Funding needs to be rethought to encapsulate direct therapy, counseling for siblings and parents, educational support and activities to keep these children developing.

My approach would be to make available more tax credits open to parents for the above items. Provide more family planning to help support the family unit and increase the funding support to promote for at home education as this is where most children feel comfortable.

Please describe the principles of public education and how education should be funded.

Asked by: Kamloops and District Labour Council asked the School Trustee 73 - TEA1 Candidates
Jennifer Rowse Answered

I beleive that education should have options for funding from public, private to homeschooling.

Funding should reward home schooling parents and provide greater support as school populations are growing and this removes stress off the system.

Another option is to build specialty schools like Isreal & Germany which provide trades & commerical education before grade 12 graduation. This model has shown huge success and economic growth. These schools also receive funding from employers that have jobs available for graduates therefore activating the private sector.
